#19: Empowering Children: Teaching the Art of Self-Love with Becky Tilley

Self-love is an essential foundation for a child's emotional well-being and overall happiness. By nurturing self-love from an early age, we equip children with the necessary tools to navigate life's challenges with resilience and confidence.

In this interview Becky and I talk about practical tools to empower our children to embrace their individuality, celebrate their strengths, find beauty in their imperfections,  and love themselves unconditionally.

Becky Tilley is a passionate writer, advocate, and content creator dedicated to spreading the message of self-love and embracing our unique qualities. Her journey towards this purpose was shaped by a deeply personal experience—both herself and her two youngest children were diagnosed with Koolen-de-Vries Syndrome.

Through this challenging experience, Becky embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery and understanding. It became clear to her that in order to be the best role model and inspiration for her children and others, she needed to cultivate a deep sense of self-love and acceptance within herself.

Becky’s new book "Thrive Rare" is a heartfelt account of her personal journey, centred around finding strength and resilience in the face of rare diagnoses, both for herself and her children. It delves into the power of embracing our uniqueness and celebrates the extraordinary within each of us.

Takeaways:

  1. Celebrate your children where they are as they are. Tell them how beautiful they are, how strong they are, how fun they are to be around! Affirm to them everything that's good and great and wonderful about who they are, and don't take any step of progress or any milestone for granted.
  2. See everyone as an individual. Not as people that are doing better, and then people that are doing worse. Everyone's got their own unique path, their way of being, their way of learning, their way of seeing the world. Encourage your kids to see and celebrate that they are learning and developing and expressing themselves in their own unique and wonderful way.
  3. Teach your children to stand up for themselves. Don’t try to shield them, because their problems will go with them no matter where they go. You can help by instilling as much self confidence in them as you can. So when people speak against them, or bully them, they will know who they are.
  4. Your kids’ life will be their life, and all you can do is love and support them through it.You can't control how people treat them nor how the world receives them. What you can control is who you show up as their mother and as an individual. So rather than putting it all on them and telling them “ You need to be confident, and you need to be secure”, encourage self- love, teach them how to do it by being the best example you can be for them to emulate. They'll learn in their own way, and they will have their own definition of what self love means. Ultimately they will be who they choose to be, and you will love them, no matter what.
  5. It’s equally important that children learn to love who they are when they're struggling, to not see that strength is the only thing to love.  We've all got flaws, we all have weaknesses and room for improvement, and I children should see that. Teach them to own it, with courage, and to be able to maintain self love, even when they know they need to grow and learn as we all do.
